The Orange County adventure use case
A lot of OC families want an SUV that handles the daily grind on the 5 or 241 but can also head up to Big Bear, Joshua Tree, or the fire roads above Trabuco Canyon on weekends. The Passport TrailSport and 4Runner both aim at that buyer - but from opposite directions.

Daily driving in Orange County
This is where the Passport wins going away. Its unibody chassis rides quieter, steers more precisely, and doesn't feel top-heavy on Antonio Parkway or the 405. The 4Runner is a truck - it feels like one at 70 mph, and it corners like one. If you're using this vehicle Monday-Friday for school runs and OC commuting, the Passport is dramatically nicer to live with.
When the pavement ends
Head up Ortega Highway or into the desert and the 4Runner starts collecting wins. Body-on-frame construction, real 4WD with a low range, more ground clearance, and a longer aftermarket parts catalog. The Passport TrailSport is very capable for dirt roads and fire roads - but the 4Runner is the tool for real trails.

Which one for South OC?
If you actually spend weekends off-road - Big Bear trails, Anza-Borrego, Baja - the 4Runner is worth the compromise. For the vast majority of OC families who want an SUV that handles a dirt road to a campsite and daily-drives comfortably, the Passport TrailSport is the smarter, cheaper, more livable choice.
